Despite all the strain, concerns and uncertainty that the current crisis is causing, we should not lose sight of the future. Now is the right time to make plans, because the crisis will pass and bring with it a new era of prosperity.
It’s a sad fact that everyone is hurting from the current crisis in some way. Many of us not directly hurt by the pandemic face the prospect of current or potential financial loss and uncertainty. Even those who are lucky enough not to have suffered financially still share unfamiliar and uncomfortable strains on our personal and professional relationships and activities caused by social distancing.
But rather than speculate on how we will get through it all, we should not lose sight of one certainty – that the virus will be defeated and our lives will return to normal, just as we have dealt with every crisis we have faced as a nation.
There will be a time, in the not too distant future, when we will catch up with friends and family, watch our favourite teams play, go to the beach or the gym, dine out, have parties, go away for weekends and even travel on long holidays. Those dreams may seem far away right now, but they will happen.
Despite last summer’s natural disasters, most people believe that we live in one of luckiest countries in the world. Our isolated location has preserved us from invasion, terrorism, and many other foreign threats. We don’t suffer from blizzards, tornados, earthquakes, volcanoes or tsunamis like many other places do. Our air is usually pure, our waters are normally safe and when crises do occur, our resilience enables us to quickly recover from them.
We enjoy every variety of landscape, from lush tropical rain forests and beautiful sandy beaches to fertile valleys, mighty lakes and rivers, magnificent harbours and snowy southern mountains. We can grow every imaginable fruit and vegetable, and below the ground are immense quantities of valuable mineral resources.
We are resourceful and freedom loving people who have come from all parts of the world, creating a democracy without revolutions or civil strife and with a cultural diversity and richness nowhere else to be found.
This is why, after every major international crisis, war or other catastrophe is over, Australia has boomed and that’s why prosperity will return once again. We will experience a huge rise in tourism, holiday makers, and migration from Europe, Asia and Africa of people seeking the security, safety and opportunities that Australia offers.
In fact, the very housing markets suffering the most at present, such as short-term business, tourist and student rentals will have the biggest boom potential later.
The time to plan and act is now, not when the recovery is upon us. This situation generates its own opportunities - so remember, the future starts today.
